I have read the various threads on vnc viewers for the 770 and seen the positive responses and exclaimations that it takes the device to a new level of functionality.

My question(s) is simple - what exactly IS a vnc viewer, what does it do and what does it allow the user to do with it?

cheers!

Though I realise this may seem very rude, and it's possible you've already done this - in which case feel free to ask more questions here - but

www.google.com then enter "vnc" - read about "RealVNC", etc.

Put simply though - VNC displays the screen of one computer on the screen of another.

VNC is virtual network computing.

Put simply, it allows you to control another computer (running a vnc server program) from the one you are at - for example administering a server in a server warehouse from home, or controlling the digital TV on your desktop from your laptop so you don't have to get up.

Screen images are transferred to the machine you are logged in from, and keyboard and mouse commands are sent back to the server. It's as if you are at on computer while you are using another (except you can't do anything too graphics intensive or the network gets swamped).

thanks for taking thw time to respond guys!

msaunby - not rude at all, I had had a quick look but wanted to know practical applications re 770

JonC - thanks for the concise answer.

couple of things then - does this work both via a wifi lan and via a remote/anywhere internet connection?

what are the security implications? (ie how secure/unsecure does it make you main pc/workstation to ourside interference?)

Can you transfer files to and from 770/remote computer via this method?

so a couple of scenarios - you could open and edit a word doc on a remote computer and print it of from same via your 770/VNC connection?

you could open and use email applications/connections set up on remote comp?

sorry if this sounds dumb, please feel free to point in direction of a simple FAQ if it does

Yes, it does. Assuming you unblock any firewall you have to allow access from wherever you are.

It makes it horribly unsecure if you do it wrong. You can set-up a home firewall to only allow access to the vnc server from other IP addresses on your home network to improve it a bit. If you plan on accessing from outside the home, you should look into using something like SSH to set up a secured tunnel to run vnc through. Here is a guide for doing that.

No. Use something else.

Yep.

Yep.

I use it at work everyday to assist users with helpdesk questions over the phone. Because both remote vnc user and the local user are sharing the screen and control, it works much better than working blind trouble shooting problems.
