Yeah, definitely. The package depends on python2.5 but should instead depend on python2.5-runtime. I'm going to fix this with the next release.

The next release will come with a more intelligent mediascanner and deferred assembling of thumbnails. This results in a great speed-up for scanning and startup in general.

Last modified dates on directories are not reliable in my opinion, because they don't tell you anything about modifications in subdirectories. So there are basically two options left for scanning:

(1) scanning all media folders for new/changed stuff
(2) watching media folders for changes

MediaBox does (1) because (2) would impose additional package dependencies and only works while the program is watching. (1) is pretty fast for just running through the directory trees, so I don't think there's a need to change this. But maybe (1) can be accompanied with (2), where inotify is available. This sounds like an interesting enhancement.
