One application for my Symbian 80 phone that is very nice is RapidReader.

http://www.rapidreader.com

It is a commercial application for reading at up to 800 wpm via syllable-and-punctuation-synchronized flashing of words on the screen.

With a 400 MHz N8x0, it should be a super platform for this application or one like it.

I have made a suggestion at their website to consider providing a version for this platform, but just in case they don't is there anything similar in the Linux world that could be ported?

I've not used ether of these;

http://wordflashreader.sourceforge.net/ Needs perl (plus various modules) and tk.

http://gnomersvp1.sourceforge.net/ Needs perl PerlGTK.

http://toykeeper.net/programs/flash/ needs Python - looks more suitable for small form factor

re RapidReader; I guess you could try a trial of the palm version in POSE or GarnetVM.

http://toykeeper.net/programs/flash/ works well. We just need someone to map the buttons to the n8xx keys and add fullscreen mode
