I've been enjoying the new SIP capability of OS2008 on my n800 and recently set up Asterisk and bought some SIP phones, one of them being Grandstream's GXV-3000, which does h.263 and h.264 video.

During a call, video from the n800 to the GS is great, but I'm having trouble getting quality video streaming to the n800 from the GS. Some things I've noticed and tried to do:
  1. Adjust the GS encoder bitrate. Too high bitrate causes the n800's cpu load to max out.
  2. Adjust the GS encoder framerate. This doesn't seem to help at all.

At best, the video has moving green areas that occasionally disappear to show a convoluted image. Both devices perform perfectly with an echo test sending and receiving their own video, but the n800 is not handling the GS's video well.

Has anyone else had better success than myself or have some experience that may help out?

Hi Randall,

Don't know if you're still pursuing this one or not, but just thought I'd post up here to be safe... I was doing some experimentation of my own with Asterisk, SIP video and the tablets and found that I ran into the exact same problem as you when using the N800 and X-Lite... did some more troubleshooting and discovered that the cause was X-Lite trying to use H263+ instead of H263... while X-Lite and asterisk seem to claim support for +, clearly the tablet doesn't. I removed the h263+ support form my SIP configurations for the tablet and X-Lite client on the asterisk box, and now everything works flawlessly! Did some research and found that 263+ really doesn't give any noticable increase in video quality or anything either so it's not even worth fighting over to try and get to work.

hmm, my * is configured:
videosupport=yes
allow=h264
allow=h263
allow=h261
allow=h263p

This is working very well N8-N8 and N8-Xlite etc. I would guess that the grandstream should also work but I don't have one yet. The nice thing is that it works across NAT without extra setups if voice is already working. The boss saw this working and now wants an N8.
