finally took the plunge and bought a N800 besides my 770 unit (which goes to my happy girlfriend) - so here are a few thoughts / rants / questions (after 3 days of playing around, so some may be shinning with the stigma of ignorance ) :

1.WEB
- web browser still crashes - I know it, you know it, bugzilla knows it, so we're set there. Let's hope it will get better in time
- flash sites - please, please, PLEASE everybody start testing anything else than youtube.com. I know Google is loveble in the "I'm in ur computer" kind of way, but there are a lot of other video sites - DailyMotion, Youku, etc + integrated players (I watch "The Simpsons" online) - and for me they don't work.
- is there a way to set the font for the browser (no zoom, please) ?
- inertial scrolling (puting it out there) ? something even better (mind readding : ) ?
- as a good thing, google maps, gmail etc work fine - kudos

2. MEDIA
Tried a few things but no real movie - still waiting for my 8GB sd card. The nokia demo movie looks nice (don't they all ...). However after reading the forums and hearing the same "how do I encode" question being answered a 100 times over I think I'm set.
Music - works. End of discution
Radio (online/FM) - works - VERY nice.
Camera - why ? what should I do with it ? can I get back my 20 dollars worth ?
Canola / UKMP / etc - I see their point. Actually, not exactly, but to each his own.

3.APPLICATIONS
FBReader - makes the nokia tablet interesting (for me). I have so many computers surfing isn't the problem - but reading a book at 5 am while the significant other is sleeping is a big plus for me.
SCUMM - move ya scurvy as5 to Monkey Island(tm)
Garnet - ? - haven't used Palm before, only WM5 (please stop preaching) so I don't have any darling applications (I'll come back to this later).

So let's get to the ugly side of the town - OS2008 itself:
- a software overclocking with each update - sweet ! Hope it continues
- usability - so an so. agree with many of Sean Luke's points. What really irks me is some of those mistakes could easily be corrected if the OS was completely open (+ doc, if I dare to dream). Please, Nokia engineer or programmer - let me select my own font, size, icons, icons size - (system wise, if possible ?). Or give me a configuration screen or something - maybe a file ? (I admit I haven't really searched a conf file - I haven't yet received my stowaway).
- start menu - why 12 tabs take all my screen ? WTF - even my Win Mobile puts _a_lot_ more info in 320x240 resolution. What is this - waste screen estate year ? And don't get me started on the "install two applications and rearrange the menu" bonanza - that alone creeps the hell out of me. Finger friendly is ok - but as an option (like with the finger keyboard).
- applets - nice. they should be frozen once arranged (stupid change from <= OS 2007). Transparency ? Why ?
- did handwriting lessons pay off ? I'm not in the mood to play for a few hours only to have it spit back fowl language when I'm writing to grandma.

GRIPES (ITT community, os and n800 itself)
Wiki - good. List of interesting applications - available, but incomplete (does Maemo download permit to sort by popularity ? couldn't work it out). Always advising to use the search is a little retarted when many questions evolve around the same problems - please use sticky posts - with wiki links, if needed. Or put a big red banner ("all ye musings have been answered in the wiki"). Search ain't worth squat if I have 200 posts to read through ...

OS - counter-productive. It takes me a few minutes to to something of importance on the computer. A lot more on the N800. Part of it because I haven't worked out all the shortcuts. Another part because nothing is where it's supposed to be (how do you delete the a main menu shortcut without uninstalling ?).

N800 - everything has been said : fugly grey mask (loved the black 770), smaller zoom buttons (you'd think they were paying by the gram) etc. No biggie - loving the new stand & radio.

Conclusions ?
- great for reading in strage places (bed at night, park, business meeting - btw, can the screen be dimmed even more in OS2008 ?)
- os not intuitive enough - too many choices being taken by the edge of the seat of the programmer who had to code a feature. Not enough configuration (but I _WILL_ read the wiki more in detail to see if I missed it).
- (hope) great for movies on the go (possible 64GB of 800x640 movie player goodness)
- if I understood correctly, the processor can go even higher. PLEASE DO ! The jump from OS2007 to OS2008 was really visible - we could all profit from another one.
- web browsing - getting there - not yet, but nearer. flash still not working (passion aside, it doesn't - it isn't watchable). uktube ? I know about it - I'll try. No the best solution - but maybe just enough
- just remembered - moon-landing game - WTF ? "edit ~/options.conf to change keyboard keys" ? is this a joke ? i know it isn't a conclusion but it really made me laugh

That's it for now- a little shallow but I can't spend all my time playing with a new gadget (I know, it sounds wrong ).
Greetings

How about something like FBReader's "scrolling"? A tap on the bottom resp. top of the page will scroll the page by X% (X to be set by user, NOT by Nokia!).

- did handwriting lessons pay off ?
Not really. Also, my N800 has now developed the foul habit of "stuttering": I can draw two or three characters (depending on the preferences) and then the HWR starts interpreting. This is fine, but while interpreting, it stops drawing ink on the screen, making the next two characters a real hit'n miss scenario.

I'd file a bug report, but I'm beyond caring...

- (hope) great for movies on the go (possible 64GB of 800x640 movie player goodness)
Don't keep your hopes up. Stuttering is still there, higher resolutions are still nigh-on impossible.
