sudo gainroot gives me:
"cal_read_block(r&d_mode): size zero, block not found?"
Can someone tell me what is going on here, and how to remedy this? Thanks much!

Did you enable r&d mode to modify the gainroot script and possibly forget to comment out a line?

mine looks like this:

#!/bin/sh -e
trap exit SIGHUP SIGINT SIGTERM
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin
#MODE=`/usr/sbin/chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool --get-rd-mode`
#if [ x$MODE = xenabled ]
#then
# echo "Root shell enabled"
/bin/sh
#else
# echo "Enable RD mode if you want to break your device"
#fi
#
looks like you forgot to comment out the line right after the PATH line:

MODE=`/usr/sbin/chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool --get-rd-mode`

you could also mdify the sudoers file to enable a "true root shell" with a simple edit. check out the maemo.org wiki for the details.

honestly, I haven't done anything, this is basically an out of the box setup, except a few applications: gaim,xterm,etc... I havent attempted to get root or done anything in that direction exctp type sudo gainroot, and I got that output. I'm confused,

Well, if R&D mode is disabled, `sudo gainroot' will not do anything useful.

It should output "Enable RD mode if you want to break your device" rather than that error, though.

Hah, are you kidding around, or does it really give that output... Now I'm getting worried that I'm getting some strange error.

Look at jayholler's version of the script above: definitely outputs "Enable RD mode if you want to break your device" if R&D mode is disabled.

I'd guess the error's coming from cal-tool.

I had assumed it was something Nokia added, only because that type of humor is very Scandinavian.
