OK, this might sound silly but I have not found an external battery charger for the N800 batteries. As in charging a battery outside of the device.

Is there one?

I know I can have external battery packs but the more junk I have to attach to the device the less attractive it is for me as a mobile device. Nor is it practical while holding the device. And the 3-4hrs battery life is not exactly great.

From eBay: http://tinyurl.com/27yyjd

You plug your N800 charger into the "desktop charger" (sort of a charging cradle for the battery)

OUTSTANDING!!! That is just what i was hoping for...that setup is similar to one of my digital camera's...cool, one more "pro" to add to my list.

I dunno why but I am so agonizing over getting an NIT. Maybe because I worry I will get lost in exploring the thing when I should be, you know, WORKING...hahaha!!

Many thanks you ya both!!

haha.. I too had the accessories well in advance of getting the actual device. Granted I waited close to 2 months for my device to ship. :F

I tried searching for the answer to this, so forgive me if this has been addressed before, but WHY IS the battery life so short? I own a N800 and I appreciate the relative snappiness of the device esp. when browsing, but are there any plans for a higher capacity battery that can still fit inside, or a firmware upgrade that can improve battery life? It recharges relatively quickly, so much so that I thought I had a defective battery. It is by far the biggest drawback of an otherwise nifty device.

The tradeoffs involved here are: run-time, capabilities (screen, WLAN, BT), weight, and thickness. Decisions have to be made, and whoever's in charge of making these particular decisions at Nokia decided that going with extra weight and thickness, or reducing capabilities, was not suitable to get longer battery life.

I'd think the extra weight and thickness would not be a problem, but then I used to tote an HP48 around, so I'm accustomed to thick, heavy gadgets. Maybe it would cost them some sales, IDK. I'd have decided differently, but I wasn't in charge of that.

It's possible a larger battery could be adapted to work, but you'd have to modify the back cover. To my knowledge, Nokia has no plans in this direction; it'll be totally DIY with all the risks that entails.

If you're not running OS2008 already, you could switch to it. It saves batteries, IMHO. (The frequency scaling helps, but it cuts both ways, so it depends how you use it.)

I got a BP-4L combination wall charger/usb charger on eBay for only $1 + $1 shipping. It's the type where you just plug the whole battery right into the charger. It came from Hong Kong in only about a week. I haven't actually tried using it yet, and to be honest I'm a little afraid to do it. On the back it says

Input: AC110-240v 50/60Hz
Output: DC 4.2V ± 0.05 350mA (Max)
Output: USB 5.0V ± 0.2V

My Nokia "official" charger says:

Input: AC 100-240V 50-60 Hz, 150mA
Output: DC 5V 890 mA

I don't know if that means it's safe to use or not. =/
