I worked in a company and their internet connection using WEP security. I got to make appt to have them setup the WEP code before I can get access to internet. The WEP code, I think, stays with the Os. Every time I switch Os, be it upgrade, or change from flash to MMC boot, the WEP code disappeared, I will be handicapped for a few days before the IT dept will set up my internet access. And this is getting worse, as I upgraded with MMC boot, from 2G, 4G, 8G, and now 16G. I swear, I have no intention to steal company secret, but can I store the WEP as a file and keep copying from one Os to another without having to beg/knock at the door of IT dept? Or maybe this is very involved and its beyond my head? Somebody?

Edit: Another thought, I have a working N800 with the internet connection, and a NEW N810 without internet connection. Is there a way I can send the connecting account, with the WEP setup from my N800 to my N810, so not to wait for another appt with the IT dept to come set up the N810 for me? I know I dont know what I am talking,.....it already stretched to the limit of my computer knowledge

TIA,

bun

Well, the WEP code is literally just a code. I don't remember if it's shown hidden or not in the connection dialog, but you might want to just ask for the code next time instead of have them put it in. You can reveal the code if it's been saved to a Mac, not sure about Windows or N8xx

Nothing prevents you technically from keeping a copy of the WEP key in a text file that you can copy/paste as needed whenever you have to reauthenticate to your wifi when upgrading. Logically, I'm sure your company would have a security policy in place stating that you shouldn't do something like that.

I do keep an encrypted list of all of my friends/families WEP keys on my phone (in SplashData). I'm going to try installing SplashData into the Garnet VM so that I have a copy there as well. Really helps when I bring a new device to anyone's home, or if I need to "be tech support" for them in getting something online.

Of course, either of these methods requires that you know what the WEP key is in the first place, or else you've got nothing to write down.

The built-in backup application backs up network settings, including wep or wpa passwords.

And the answer to your question is:
under /etc/osso-af-init/gconf-dir/osso/connectivity/IAP/???/%gconf.xml where ??? stands for the network name you gave your nokia.

I am sorry I did not make it clear, it is a big organization, and trust nobody. I have not asked, but I doubted they would give out the "secret" WEP.

I will ask tomorrow and be prepared to get a,

"which part of the NO you dont understand"
