Hello all.

I am just starting out on the N800 and am having a bit of trouble with the wifi connectivity.

At home had no trouble setting up wifi, with wap and all.

But have had no luck connecting to "public" sites. N800 finds the hotspots and "connects". Adding the spot to the connections list and I get a solid wifi indicator, only this time with a extra dot on top. (doesn't happen at home).

In any case, I go to the browser and punch in an address and I get an error page, "Server not found".

Any advice or help?

As far as I know the spots are "real" the name of the connections at least sound trustworthy, verizon wifi and us airways public wifi...

Am I missing something?

Thanks again,

Fernando

If you are missing something - I am too. I have noticed that many, many times. If the WiFi spot has the "dot" on the top - forget it. It won't work. Try to find another one without the dreaded dot.

I have no idea what the dot officially is supposed to indicate - but it indicates to me that the hotspot won't work.

It's an ad-hoc network. You wont get any internet access from it. . . .

Note of warning: judging networks based on their names is about the dumbest thing you can do. At best you wont get any internet access, at worst, you're connecting to a honeypot and bad things will happen.

Connecting to random open wifi hotspots is both a very poor security practice, and of questionable legality in many jurisdictions.

I use my xp box at home to give me an internet connection and it creates an ad hoc network. The dot just means it that is not an access point. And usually you can not get an ip over them, but for just me the xp internet connection sharing ad hoc works just fine.

Note: I totally agree with the General don't just go internet hunting with your tablet, it is not safe or ethical.

- go to Tysons Mall and use Apple's free wifi or a local Panera (Columbia Pike and Rt. 7, IIRC)... i've used both (up there and down here) and they work fine...

- have not seen the 'dot' on my NIT though... will look out for it... tks!

Jeez - my first post after many an hour lurking and I get a GeneralAntilles reply, nothing like a little bucket of shame to get one going...

very well... so you don't touch the "ad hoc" networks.

Thanks,

Fernando
