OK, this is what I have discovered so far.

I investigated the possible memory corruption as described by speednut and found the following:

With my MiniSD card REMOVED I get
In partitions:
254 0 1966080 mmcblk0
254 1 2007032 mmcblk0p1

In df:
/dev/mmcblk0p1 1999206

So it looks like I have the problem.

I started the process of backing up my internal memory card and guess what? I get an error message:
Unable to connect via USB. Memory card in use: Internal memory card.

I have closed every app that I can, rebooted about three times and still cant access the internal card.

I guess I can't go any further until I can back up and then I should be able to reformat the internal card.

So what is my next step?

Thanks to all for your help.
Derek

Just use scp or sftp.

General,

If you can spare just a little more digital ink, could you please elaborate?
(To illustrate how much I know about maemo, I recently spent about an hour searching through Google for the maemo copy command, finally found it in a script. It's cp if anyone is interested)

I'm guessing I have to type this in somewhere with some perameters and possibly with some physical connection (USB?).

Thanks.

I did some searching and found out what scp is (Secure copy) and found the following helpful page.
http://acs.ucsd.edu/info/scp.shtml

I presume the parametrs described here work the same as maemo?

I also presume I would need to type it in xterm since i won't be using unix commands in Windows. However, I'm not sure what my destination folder will be called when connected to my PC.

It did occur to me that I might be able to copy to my MiniSD card to backup and then resore from there after formatting my internal card and perhaps that is what was intended by GA?

qwerty12 said "See if you can backup data on internal card. Only backup important stuff like music etc. Dont copy apt-archive-cache for example."

Since my internal (fixed) card seems corrupt I don't think this should be attempted - agree? (I'm reading "on internal card" as onto internal card but perhaps he meant "that is on intrenal card"?)

In any case I'm not exactly sure what I need to copy (or scp), qwerty12 warned against copying apt-archive-cache.

I guess I'm asking if someone can give the full command line(s) that I need to type in xterm to copy from my internal card to the miniSD card and would one just do the reverse to restore?

I would also appreciate being educated about the exact meaning of the mmcblk0p1 lines from /partitions and df. I guess it's memory card, block and partition information?

Thanks once again to all.

The message "Unable to connect via USB. Memory card in use: Internal memory card" may be caused by use of virtual memory. Make sure that it is disabled (control panel>memory>virtual).

good luck

It is up to you if you wish to create a backup or not. If you don't need one, just format!

I don't think the actual files on the card and indeed recopying your music onto it eg wouldn't cause problems with applications.

You don't need to copy the cache, I believe it regenerates and no point is copying a folder back for something you are having trouble with.

I believe scp needs a ssh server running on the nit. I posted a workaround to install root, ssh etc in the thread yerga mentioned.

good luck
After unchecking the virtual memory box and tapping OK I get an error: Unable to remove virtual memory and the check mark returns.

BTW,, I have 128MB enabled.

FWIW, this is my storage report from the other tab:
Device 95.4 MB avaialble
Internal memory card 144.0 MB avaialble
Removable memory card 147.3 MB available.

I'm just wondering if apart from the reported size conflict, I am having problems because the internal card is almost full?

I took a look at what is on my internal card and it seems like I do need some things I think - eg: all the maps are there.

There is 'no' music, at least not any of mine (mine is all on the miniSD)

But another strange this is I have 'sword' bible program on the int. card and it has six repeated and nested directory structures with the actual text six deep. I might pop over to the correct forum and ask aboiut this. I could obviously reinstall this though.
The only other folder is the claws mail which contains empty mail folders (I keep no mail on the IT). Wonder if Claws will recreate it's mail folders?

I'll check on your 'workaround' in yerga's post and see if I can follow it.
What is ssh?

Cheers

The maps are to download from within the "Map" applications. You really don't need to back them up.

Rather than trying to explain UNIX to you from scratch (which is going to take a very long time with what you're starting with), you're much better off just formating the card and moving on.
