qwerty12 said "See if you can backup data on internal card. Only backup important stuff like music etc. Dont copy apt-archive-cache for example."
Since my internal (fixed) card seems corrupt I don't think this should be attempted - agree? (I'm reading "on internal card" as onto internal card but perhaps he meant "that is on intrenal card"?)
In any case I'm not exactly sure what I need to copy (or scp), qwerty12 warned against copying apt-archive-cache.

The message "Unable to connect via USB. Memory card in use: Internal memory card" may be caused by use of virtual memory. Make sure that it is disabled (control panel>memory>virtual).
good luck

It is up to you if you wish to create a backup or not. If you don't need one, just format!
I don't think the actual files on the card and indeed recopying your music onto it eg wouldn't cause problems with applications.
You don't need to copy the cache, I believe it regenerates and no point is copying a folder back for something you are having trouble with.
I believe scp needs a ssh server running on the nit. I posted a workaround to install root, ssh etc in the thread yerga mentioned.

I took a look at what is on my internal card and it seems like I do need some things I think - eg: all the maps are there.

I investigated the possible memory corruption as described by speednut and found the following:
With my MiniSD card REMOVED I get
In partitions:
254 0 1966080 mmcblk0
254 1 2007032 mmcblk0p1
In df:
/dev/mmcblk0p1 1999206
So it looks like I have the problem.
I started the process of backing up my internal memory card and guess what? I get an error message:
Unable to connect via USB. Memory card in use: Internal memory card.
I have closed every app that I can, rebooted about three times and still cant access the internal card.
I guess I can't go any further until I can back up and then I should be able to reformat the internal card.
So what is my next step?
Thanks to all for your help.
