The horror!!!

When I try to launch the web browser, it puts up the small splash screen that says it's loading, then the splash screen disappears, and nothing else happens. No browser!

I'm on OS2008 on an N800. I'm booting off mmc, not from internal flash.

In addition to rebooting, I've tried removing the prefs.js file per this post and removing the microb user settings per post by iamthewalrus. Still no browser.

I think everything else loads and works (although, right before this problem arose, I couldn't get nano or ncurses-base to install -- maybe because they're OS2007? -- and I can't get my Application Manager listing to refresh.)

If possible, I'd really rather not have to create the mmc card from scratch as it took me a lot of time to set it up to begin with, not to mention all the work I've done on top of the basics. (If it matters, when I load the OS from flash, the browser works fine. But all my installations and modifications are on the mmc.) (And, of course, per Murphy's Law, I have purchased and am awaiting delivery of backup software so I can copy the mmc card ... but I haven't done that yet.)

Any ideas??

Try to copy the browser libs from the flash to the card...

Also you can try to rename you microb dir on the card and copy the one from the flash.

Bundyo, thanks for responding. I'm not a Linux user, so I may need a bit of a step-by-step.

In emelFM2 I see that there isn't a .mozilla folder viewable within /home/user/ -- is it hidden? Is that where the browser libs are? If not, where? (And if not all together in a mozilla folder, how do I know which libs are for the browser?) How do I get to them and copy them? Through Xterm?

I have the same problem with the microb dir -- where is it?

EDIT: Post #10 below by pipeline (who did the port of emelFM2 to maemo) gives the answer as to comprehensively seeing the invisible files. But I had also found a way to see any specific invisible file if you know where it ought to be: just type in the path. Thus, I knew that .mozilla ought to have been in /home/user/ but couldn't see it. So I just added the next level manually by typing it in. That is, I typed in /home/user/.mozilla and the contents of the .mozilla folder displayed.

I usually use ssh and mc to do these things, but emelfm should be okay. All files beginning with a dot a re not shown, look in emelfm options there should be an option to show hidden files.

Libs should be located in /usr/lib, however i don't really know how exactly are they called. You can try to copy the whole dir, but if the file versions do not match, you may brick your mmc boot and need to do it again. High risk here.

Theoretically you should be able to use the same technique as when you created your boot from mmc, but now copy only the whole /usr/ dir... Backup before that If you're under linux, you can easily backup your mmc to a dir (again like when you create a boot from mmc, but with a reader and an empty dir in your machine).

Bundyo, thanks again for replying promptly. Before proceeding I'm going to wait until my backup software arrives. (I'm not on Linux, but the backup software will let me backup a Linux partition within Windows. Then if I screw up, at least I can get back to where I am now.) (I tried using partimage from a bootable Linux CD, but wasn't educated enough to proceed very far.)

I had exactly the same problem and didn't find a solution, just reinstall the OS. I'm sorry.

Um, if you're desperate, i just compiled Midori (which uses WebKit backend), works, but not hildonized, i can post it somewhere, so that you can use it while waiting for the backup

While Midori sounds pretty good, I'd really prefer some Ouzo or a Frangelico. The hospitality of the people on this board is astounding!!!

Joking aside, Bundyo, I'm not desperate, and I really appreciate the offer. Heck, if I really *needed* dependability, I'd have bought an iPhone! I can load the perfectly-fine-working browser on the flash-based OS as I'm a dual-booter.

The upset is that I've put so much time into perfecting what's on the mmc for my purposes (comprehensive electronic companion for extended jaunts out of the country), that I hate the idea of starting over. But I'm not leaving the US next until September.

Maybe I'll find with back-up that it won't be that hard; but for a dual-booting non-Linux-user, I fear it will be.

emelfm2 hides hidden files by default... hit the big H icon to toggle between showing them or hiding them

those files should be editable by default too since under /home/user

To edit root files (probably not needed for this problem) you have to launch (as root) emelfm2 in xterm
