Every free WIFI spot I find - even with restricted bandwidth is FAR better.
EDGE is nothing more than GPRS with different modulation to speed up by 4x.
PING is horrible - up to even 4 seconds. Downloading single file is bad and misleading test imho. Look what's the number of element to download for today's single page. Multiply this value by mean ping time and you'll find why packet based transmissions is crap over cellular network. It's acceptable only where there is no choice.
