Has anyone tried installing unionfs? If you have multiple RS-MMC cards, you are able to save different "profiles" for each card. Root filesystem is extended onto RS-MMC. Seems to have simple install.

Yep, and IMHO it's a much cleaner solution than the symlinks one. Works well on both 2005-42 and 2006-13.

I've got mounts of:
  1. /etc/others-menu
  2. /home/user
  3. /usr/share/themes
  4. /var/lib/gconf
  5. /var/lib/install

i.e. anything I may have customised but want to stay over a reflash. Arguably it also alleviate's the need for backup.

Cheers,

Andrew

I did not think of the backup aspect of this. I will give it a go. Did you notice any preformance hit? Stability? Thanks.
