Has anyone tried installing unionfs? If you have multiple RS-MMC cards, you are able to save different "profiles" for each card. Root filesystem is extended onto RS-MMC. Seems to have simple install.

Yep, and IMHO it's a much cleaner solution than the symlinks one. Works well on both 2005-42 and 2006-13.
I've got mounts of:
/etc/others-menu
/home/user
/usr/share/themes
/var/lib/gconf
/var/lib/install
i.e. anything I may have customised but want to stay over a reflash. Arguably it also alleviate's the need for
backup
.
