Hi, I don't have a N810 yet<G>, trying to sell the wife on handy this will be in Nova Scotia. We are going on vacation for three weeks at the end of July and wondered a couple things:

Using USB, can you upload your photos from the digital camera to the N810 and then edit them.

Or use the N810 upload them back to photo website for others to see.

Lastly, since I'm a pc/mac kind of person, do I have time to be proficient with the N810/Linix in time to really use it...about 2.5 weeks. I am wondering about how hard it is to loading programs and root stuff.

I may be pushing it and could wait for the next model<G>.

Yes, you can upload your photos from a digital camera in many cases.

You can do this one of four ways (ordered in terms of necessary technical know-how):

1) Use the same memory card in both your camera and your N810. (I would suggest using a microSD card with a mini-micro adapter in the tablet and a micro-fullSD adapter in the camera.

2) Use an external card reader. (this might require a powered USB hub)

3) Plug your camera into your tablet and try to have it recognized as an external memory drive (in the same manner as your computer mounts a card when you plug in your camera) In theory this should work, although the tablet might not have drivers for your camera model, or your camera model might require special software to communicate with a computer

4) Someone on these forums wrote a program that pulls pictures over USB to their camera as they were shooting. (Way cool!) It's still not 100% functional, but if you're interested that thread's available here

There's a couple different image editors for the tablet. (some people even got GIMP working... sorta) What kind of edits were you hoping to achieve? There's a thread on image editors that talks about several editors that can rotate/resize/crop photos and also mentions several web-based services that work with the tablet. There's also several drawing apps and even a port of Krita (a huge photoshop-like image editor) for the KDE environment on the tablet.

As for uploading to the web, there's a too here that provides a nice interface for uploading to picassa/flickr Most photo sites that support uploading should also work.

As for your question about Linux proficiency, it really depends on what you want to use the tablet for. For what you've mentioned no, you shouldn't have to know that your tablet is running Linux at all. Loading programs is usually a snap (there's a handy application manager that's supposed to take all the hard work out of installing applications)

For gaining root, there's an extremely easy tool called easyroot. if you click on that link in your tablet it should download and install automatically. Once it's installed, you can open up XTerminal and type "root" to drop into a root shell.

Many variables to get what I need accomplished That's good.

I was kind of thinking that other stuff would be:

GPS in Nova Scotia, but it looks like a small place and may not need it.
Email, of course. Radio and or movies/TV shows. But I could investigate these on the road at night as a lot of places we are staying at say they have wifi.

It's down to either bring/lugging the Macpro laptop or see if the N810 will fill my requirements.

My wife is thinking I'm trying to get a new toy The horror!
