several times, my N800(diablo) lost response totally when i try some new but not so stable software, evenif the power on/off button is dead,
all i can do is pluging off the battery, someone said it will damage the battey or my NIT ,
is there some method to avoid this(pluging off battery)?

You can try to hold the power button 4 seconds, but if that doesn't work, the only options are unplugging the battery or letting it get out of power. I'd agree this isn't ideal, but even on my old Nokia phone I have to do this sometimes.

I have always heard bad things about disconnecting the battery, but I don't recall much dire happening when I've been forced to do so.

The way I think about it is hey, the worst that can happen is that I have to reflash, which is really not that bad a thing. If you don't know how to put your tablet back together after reflashing, you need to learn.

I recently reflashed just out of a sense that my life was incomplete...
