I'm look for a Java Virtual Machine for OS2006. jamvm worked well on OS2005... Has anything been prepared for 2006?

I don't know if Kaffe could be ported to it. Kaffe has an JIT compiler, versus the jamvm interpretation, thus would be faster. It seems some people have tried(?) or suggested it before, but I could not find anyone with it working.

Same question here. Sounds like a lot of people had played with various VMs with 2005, but I don't see any info on release for IT2006.

Would Java make sense on the 770? Seems like the architecture is slow enough with pure C, I imagine interpreting Java would really bog it down.

Although Java on desktop PCs is rarely interpreted these days. I'm not sure if any of the free VMs (e.g. JamVM) include an ARM JIT.

Having the ability to do stuff in Java (not even GUI), even if slow, would be handy for me though...

Yes, the cpu of the nokia 770 has some sort of java acceleration, as seen by running "cat /proc/cpuinfo" in a terminal.

Anyway, seems like someone has ported jamvm to 2006 OS now, as seen in a recent thread on this forum.

Ok, let's explore this. Java, even slow, interpreted Java, is better than no Java (imagine your morning, like everytime you wake your 770, with no coffee--persish the thought ). So now we see that the 770 even has Java acceleration BUILT IN!

Nokia: why don't we have Java?

(Sort of like praying, isn't it? Sometimes your prayers are answered and sometimes they're not)

I am just wondering why. Heretical, isn't it?

1) Nokia programmers/engineers don't know how to add it.

2) No room in the flash memory.

3) There was a huge snowstorm in Nokia last winter and it delayed development--something had to go, Java.

4) ARM/Sun require large licence fees to use the Jazelle extensions, which Nokia deemed to not have sufficient ROI.

I'm putting my money on (4)... however using Jazelle we could get some really good Java performance - possibly good enough for us third party devs to ship Java applications for end users.

...which'd be fantastic.

5) Maybe they just don't have spare developers to work on adding Java support to Nokia 770 and are working to improve some other more important things
