any reason not to have this set on "automatic"?

I assume you mean enlarging the memory cache to include a swapfile on the MMCmobile card? Sorry if I misunderstood you.

Performance-wise, no, no reason not to make it default. Utility-wise, yes.

Given the system design, if you connect via USB to a host, you need to shut down all applications if you are using a swapfile on the MMC. Some people might not like that.

I suppose it's also possible that some might never upgrade from the lovely hot pink 64MB "Barbie's First MMCmobile Card" shipped with the Nokia 770. If they don't, then taking up most or all of the card with swapfile makes it tough to transfer files. (Yes, yes, the card isn't literally hot-pink, but 64 MB's is pretty useless for most)
