Umm...........you guys dont burn DVD? 8.5G, come on. 4.7 G is things of the distant past

I want to hear some experience about burning. For me, 8.5G is very useful.

Ummm... Do you have a link somewhere?

If you want bleeding edge stuff, maybe you should look at Blue Ray disks... aren't regular DVD's a thing of the past...

most people i have been in contact with use external hardrives these days.

not that im really sure if i want to go that way. i kinda like a storage system where one can seperate storage media from the head hardware.

at least one is looking at a recovery if the hardware breaks down, unlike a hardrive...

and blu-ray is a bit expensive pr disc imo...

Silly me, did not post the URL, here it is, http://www.buy.com/prod/memorex-50pk...205147220.html

They jacked up the price to $36.99, interesting. Still free shipping.

That is exactly what I am thinking of. $79.99 for 1TB USB/eSTAT ext HD, http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...54&dcaid=17654. It is very cheap, very convenient, but very very very risky. 1 TB info gone if it go belly up! Has it happened? ALL THE TIME! I just have a 120 G HD belly up after 3 yrs of faithful service. One does not care of backup until one gets burned. The bigger the HD, the MORE riskier (not in a scientific meaning). Since I have one HD belly up and learned my lession dearly, I am now triple backup, back up to 2 ext hD for important stuff. I still think burning is better.

@Mara: and @TSO: Blu disc is currently remaining too costly, I think.

Newegg: BR DVD Burner $200
Meritline: BR SL write once $400/25 pack (25G)
Software:?

If the technology is there, I am not sure, we still talking about BR vs DVD: 20$/25G about 0.8$/G vs 0.7$/8.5G about 0.08$/G, a difference of 1000%

I have a small number of DLs that I use when I really need to back up something over the 4.3G limit of the SL (which I already bought a large number of).

My MacBookPro works fine, as does a 20x (SL speed) in an external case and UJ8400 Matushita in a portable case = the latter two drives I got from geeks.com for under $30.

With external terabyte (or large fraction thereof) hard drives coming down in price, I tend to just mirror the whole drive to one or two. On the Macbook, it will generally let you copy the files on a DVD and play them from a directory.

I don't trust DL media for backups.

In the past, I had nothing but trouble with those Memorex DL discs... it could always be that my Pioneer 111 drive doesn't like them -- disc after disc would fail to burn successfully with OS X Toast.

Wow, this is a pretty strong statement. True, I bought it mainly for backup. And I also agree, this is kind of new....I would test the water rather jump right in. Thanks, ace.
