The alice mid is the same hardware as the gigabyte m528, aigo mid p8888, compal jax10, and SFR M! PC.

That is the italian version and it comes with midinux like the others not XP but you can put XP on it if you want. The alice mid is actually available with a contract unlike the other variations of the device so far which means you can get it way cheaper but get stuck with $50/mo 3g plan.

Do you know how a US resident could attain one of these?
I found one on the TIM website, as well as the BenQ S6, but i am unsure if they will ship to the US, and for what price.

right now the only one I know for sure you can get is the p8860 from ebay. It is the same but it does not have the 3mega pixel camera on the back or 3g modem. It has wifi and all the other stuff though.

The p8888 and gigabyte m528 will be available some time in Jan or Feb from http://www.expansys.com and http://www.mobilx.hu

These will run you like $700 though so prepare to shell out some serious cash. I would wait until nokia releases the next tablet though because it will probably be better and cheaper but you never know.

Well i'm looking to get SOMETHING before next semester begins, but you're right, 700$ + the elevated shipping cost is something I'll probably try to avoid.

Well patience IS a virtue, so i will wait until CES 2009, and hopefully some of these devices will begin appearing, if not, then there's always the handy N810.

Thanks very much for the info Voltron!

there is a small taster of what to expect here

Of course we have seen these already and what I want to see is what remains in the bag.

He (Uday?) was a bit cagey about pulling those out.

I don't care about the form factors, what matters is the UI ontop.

If its just windows or gnome or whatever its a bit meh!

AGHH SHOW ME THE CONTENTS OF THE BAG

I bet they will show the new Lincroft architecture that is a system on a chip. It's supposed to use like 10x less power and be smaller so maybe ARM will have some serious competition for 2010.

I wonder if we are about to leapfrog a hardware generation here. Most of the MID devices that we know of were announced and demonstrated at IDF August 2007 and some even earlier than that.

I am hesitant to buy MID technology that is one and a half years old. Why has it taken so long for these devices to come to market?

To my mind, one major factor holding things up is the lack of a viable operating system. All this harking back to XP and trying to run Vista doesn't really help the platform. But what is the alternative.

I can't really get a grip on what to expect. Moblin has 7,000 developers working on it, this includes Canonical, Wind River and Asianux

I just hope this produces the goods before the slumbering giant Microsoft wakes up.
