I've been thinking again. Yes, I know, that's dangerous. Anywho, there's discussion going around the web that the newly opened whitespace (formerly part of the analog tv spectrum) with open free unrestricted internet access that's due to be offered soon will be available nationwide within a year. If that's true, what do you guys think will happen to all the high priced plans for 3g offered by the phone companies? I mean, seriously. $60/month for a 5gb plan? If Google (and the companies working with them) have their way, ad supported free internet is going to be huge, widely accepted, and 3g, and the upcoming 4g are gonna get hammered into the ground.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think Google's plan is a pipe dream, or will it truly be a customer friendly alternative that'll crush the current telco monopolies?

I thought the republicans shut down free broadband in the stimulus package...

There are so many ads today, I would not mind seeing more to get free internet. The problem, which carrier is going to carry a device that can access said internet? None. So, if consumers can't get a device that can log in, its going to flop, otherwise everyone will love it...

Well, if it uses industry standard wimax, or 4g, then you can bet that any device that's either wimax or 4g capable could access it.

Possibly works.

The freed spectrum will at least allow more state supported monopolies to roll out their own WWAN.
