Well at the risk of getting back on topic. console-tools may be an option. Although I have not tested it, nor am I sure if it would work. If you install a fresh OS flash and then take a full backup and save it. When the next OS version comes out you take an incremental backup. You then upgrade the tablet and then lay back down only the incremental.
I guess it depends also what has been upgraded in the OS release.
I will do some playing with next version..

...i can't see ANY .deb packages in
/var/cache/apt/archives
so PLEASE if anyone knows if and where maemo stores the .deb installation files after one has downloaded and installed an app using Application Manager, I'd be truly thankful
