I had an idea today for using the new nokia tablet (rx-51 or N900) as a phone (because I hate my phone now). At&t offers Text accessibility plans for deaf people that includes unlimited data and 5000 sms for $30/month. If you got this plan for the new nokia and used skype or gizmo or something for voip then you could have cell and land line calling, sms, and mobile data for a little over $30/month. I think the skype call out plan is like $3/month. This seems like something that could replace my cell phone so that I could carry only the nokia around. The only caveat I see would be that your friends would have to send sms to your At&t number, but call you on your voip number. Maybe AT&T offers call forwarding? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Here is the AT&T plan:

From the page:

So, whether this plan will be approved for use with the RX-51 or could be purchased in a "just give me the SIM" manner remains to be seen.

Also, the plan is "for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and/or hearing loss", and AT&T may discourage the sale of this plan to people not in those categories.

Thanks for pointing this out though. I didn't realize cellular operators had plans for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Deaf people skyping... this would be very credible...

Honestly, many data plans explicitly disallow the usage of VoIP. Even if it would be technically possible (which is not the case with some data plans), you'd get into trouble if AT&T finds out.
