I can see lots of changes in ffmpeg SVN related to WMV support recently. Probably MPlayer can play these WMV files already or will be able to play them soon, did not try it though

MPlayer (yes, on 770 too) can play wmv up to v8.

Where can you find a mplayer .deb?
I found a kmplayer .deb and installed it but it doesn't perform very well and you cant configure it anyway like you could with mplayer from console.
