Handwriting recognition is one of my obsessions, as those who know me in this forum have already experienced, perhaps ad nauseam.

So, the other day I was surfing around on the net and I came across GPERosetta, the HWR engine of the GPE branch of Opie, one of the better handheld Linux distros (GPE means that it uses the GTK toolkit). Unfortunately, just about the only useful information I have at the moment is this:

http://www.handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/GpeRosetta

At first, I was quite enthousiastic about it, because Rosetta was the excellent print recognizer in Apple's Newton MessagePad (only in the later models), but the screenshots and commentary made it clear that the name is the only resemblence: GPERosetta is clearly (and unfortunately) a character-by-character recognizer.

Nevertheless, the 770's HWR being what it is (and that's one notch above abominable), I'd like to know if people on this list have had experiences with GPERosetta and would like to comment on those.

There is a lot of call lately for a hardware keyboard for the 770 (mostly after the revelation of that Sony-that-shall-not-be-named-here), but it is my experience that for screen-oriented handhelds a good HWR is much more useful than a mini-keyboard and certainly more than a thumbboard, so I'm not giving up the fight yet.
