They say that the source code for java micro edition will be available by then end of the year. Does this mean anything for Java on the Nokia 770?

It should certainly make it easier to get full Java on the 770; although things like JamVM and Classpath are probably at a similar level now for most Java apps.

The problem will be speed: is there a JIT for ARM which will be available; and integration: how do you modify the GUI classes to better integrate into Hildon? how do you make the virtual keyboard work correctly? etc.

The latter is certainly possible: AWT apps on Psions had their menu appear when the menu button was pressed, not constantly at the top - but how easy this would be for Swing too, I don't know.

Cheers,

Andrew

I would also be interested in whether java applets could be working in opera. I suppose quite many people need java for their bank systems / poker sites.

An open sourcing of Java would have no effect on any in-browser support for Opera on the 770.

I surprised there isn't an S60 environment add-on. S60 3rd Edition wouldn't be a bad little addition.

AFAIK The Opera browser on the 770 supports Netscape style plugins, so it should be easy enough to get in-browser Java support with an appropriately compiled plugin.

True, so an open source Java plugin which matches the Netscape API might work with Opera on the 770.

I wouldn't hold my breath, though...
