check that you have both free and non-free components for extras-devel.

Send the log from application manager's tool->log dialog

I had the same issue as OP with atscene, but the reply (from the developer?) on the @web thread seems to mention that the correct name of the application is digiaatscene, not atscene.

I apparently had extras-devel pointed at the chinook distribution and couldn't see digiaatscene, changed that to diablo, found digiaatscene, and now everything installed properly

sudo apt-get install digiscene fixed it for me.
