I found "Think Unix" by Jon Lasser to be a good starting point as well as "Linux in a nutshell."

I'm purely a hobbyist when it comes to Linux/Unix platforms, although I have a good core understanding computers in general. Think Unix may be a little too simple for you, but coming from a mostly MSDOS/Windows world, it helped in, well, changing the way I think.
