I was about to create a thread with a mockup for this just the other day. I don't have the mockup made yet, but I was envisioning something for the rotated mode that was a transparent keyboard similar to the iPod's or Android's (softkeyboard: 3rd-party, youtube vid of it in action here).

Okay, lets clear this up. There's no such keyboard for Maemo 4. The video shows a programming example and is not integrated in any way with the system.

True, but the current design can be a good reference, if someone intent to do such keyboard (not a easy task, I guess).

The fact that you would a keyboard like that doesn't imply that somebody will code it for you...
As stated, it is not an easy task to come up with a fully working keyboard like that one that integrates perfectly with the OS, and by the way we have not one but 4 different working keyboards (one of wich can be easily customized with a simple text file), so there's no real need for a fifth keyboard (especially if the main goal of the new one is to make NITs look more like the dumbPhone).
I hope people with "abilities" (watch out for Sylar!) will use their coding skills to give the community new and better applications (and I thank them for what they have done so far, and I'll always be more thankful as apps keep getting more and better ) because there's no point in having a shiny new keyboard in a system without good applications...

I don't mean to be polemic, but if you really want that kind of keyboard you should try programming it yourself
