I was curious if it was possible to use a regular PC (linux/win/etc.) to download and populate Maemo Mapper databases (.db files), so that you can keep these databases offline (off of the N8x0), until you need them?
Basically, I find that downloading 400-800MB of map data on the N810 time consuming, so I'd like to have my PC do the work and when I'm ready to take my tablet with me to another location (some other city or state) I have the maps ready on my server, and I just have to swap out "Toronto.db" for "California.db", and I'm done.
Is there any way to do this, or do I have to download each of these on the N810 itself, and store them on the server from there?
That script there, posted by another member, will do just that for you. But there's two downsides. 1) it only does google maps, and 2) it doesn't build a valid database. Maemo Mapper rejects it. I've passed it on to someone else who's looking into fixing that. Hopefully we'll have the script back at some point fixed and able to, at the very least, do google maps, and maybe some other repositories.
