Because of the N8x0's lower speed, I've found that cartoons and anime are perfect under this without any transcoding of the video.
Ukki, however, is a cartoon hater so I don't think he's ever really seen the same pixel perfect results I'm getting on my end.
Anyway, I use it about once a day and watch a 24 minute episode in bed before crashing out for the night.
Thanks to knots, I pretty much stopped gaming entirely since this to me is so much more entertaining.
Janne has made the setup so easy that even I managed to get through it in about 4 minutes and that included downloading the two installation files on the computer along with the one needed for the tablet.
Check it out. Definitely one of the most creative apps available.
I've been using it for a few months now and it still puts a stupid looking smile on my face.
So could I stream movies from Netflix on my laptop and have them go to my N810 via Knots2?
Netflix --> Laptop --> N810 ?
Just watch it on your laptop dude.
What you're asking doesn't make much sense.
I was going to try and watch an episode of Dawson's Creek later tonight since DVD support seems to be featured now and I'm curious as to how well it might work on our little handheld.
I can post the results for you in about 6 hours or so since you also have a N8x0.
I'm not expecting much on this so I've got my expectations somewhat low.
By the way, this is a good TV show about pretty white people with real problems so no one better give me any #$%@! about this either! *lol*
Well, what I was going to use it for in that case was to stream some kid show off Netflix to my laptop and then stream it, through Knots 2, to my tablet - and hand the tablet to my girlfriend's niece to watch it on. That way she doesn't hog my laptop when she is in kid-show-waching mode.
1) When you 'add' folders that contain media on your PC does it crawl down and automatically add media in all sub-folders under that directory as well?
EDIT: Yes, apparently it does.
2) Is there any way to add media in a folder but not media that are located in a folder underneath it?
3) I read that you can add image extensions to media to scan for but that they will be treated like '5 sec videos' - is there a chance that images will be given a more 'permanent' treatment in their own section in Knots?
As somewhat of a photographer I got hundreds upon hundred of photos I would LOVE to be able to 'stream' to my tablet
4) I assume that there is no 'auto-scan' on folders. If I add/remove any media to folders on my PC I will have to manually re-scan that folder right?
5) Any chance of adjusting the volume on the tablet by using the zoom-keys like Vagalume does?
EDIT: I can do this when playing videos - but not when playing music.
6) After 'adding missing covers' I get cover art on the actual song. But when browsing my music by album the folders doesn't show the album cover arts. Are cover arts only associated with individual songs and never at a higher level?
7) And now the newbiest question of them all...: How does it all really work? The server I'm running on my computer is viewed via a localhost:1978 page. Is the content that I sync actually stored somewhere else or is the localhost/server setup just creating an 'index' of media that the tablet accesses - and nothing 'leaves' my computer and gets saved somewhere else?
So far looking very interesting. Will play more tonight and sorry for the very newbie questions.

Well you can do it already with very little changes, but I could make it work by default. But I doubt I'm going to change how it works now, I will keep it VLC based.
4) I assume that there is no 'auto-scan' on folders. If I add/remove any media to folders on my PC I will have to manually re-scan that folder right?
Yes. But you can do it from the client menu. That's why it's wise to add as many paths as possible so you don't have to rescan your whole collection every time. I haven't promoted latest diablo client to extras yet, so you need to get it from -devel if you want folder specific updating from client.
5) Any chance of adjusting the volume on the tablet by using the zoom-keys like Vagalume does?

It should work for both videos and music. I think dpad should change the mixer volume too.

Images are tied to individual items and only album tag should show the art in its values (album names). But not when browsing by path for example.

Knots is basically a web server. It stores everything (settings/info/images) into .config/knots2/knots.db. So by removing the .config directory inside knots folder you can revert to default settings again.
To get rid of it completely, you only need to delete the knots folder and the two menu items.
Knots only talks with the outside world when fetching lyrics/movie info/subtitles and if you use the remote discovery. It then updates your ip address every 6 hours to my public web server and uses that info to generate your sharing links and make sure your client can connect to your server without you having to know your public ip address.
So basically nothing will ever leave your machine unless you want to share it with people.
hello ukki
i need some help
am connected to my home's wireless router to the internet
i downloaded the knots server and ran vlc and started the server and i was able to add music to my collection on knots and everything was going smoothly on the pc. in the settings i did not modify anything really ( am using windows 7 )
i downloaded the client on my n900 and i was connected to the network just fine on my laptop.
i was able to browse my added files on knots from the n900 client BUT the problem is when i click a song on my n900 it shows that its playing but no music comes out. same with video as it shows the video play but no image is there
i can see the files on my n900 and can play them but with no actualy music or video coming out.
i have a k-lite codec media pack installed on my windows if that matters and also whenever am on my PC trying to play my added collection in the knots server THE SAME HAPPENS
on the PC flow player opens and then starts playing the song but no noise comes out. its a really annoying problem.
anyone can help me please ?
also when am connecting from 3G it says on the client that authentication was successful with remote discovery but then says server was not found.

Few suggestions:
Make sure you don't use IE.
Make sure you have Flash plugin installed and you don't have any Flash/Javascript blocking addons.
Make sure you have selected the Browser transcoding profile if you watch it with a browser (Theora should work with Firefox too)
Make sure your firewall doesn't block access to ports 19780-19790.
If you can get picture/audio with the browser, client should then work too.
alright now am getting a normal stream from my client on my n900 and i can see my collection but when i connect through 3g its giving me an error as its authenticating the username and password of remote play but not ficinding the server
i enabled the ports but i still think my firewall is blocking them, as when i check if they're open it tells me the port are not closed by they're in stealth or the operation times out. does that mean that they're open but can't be accessed ?
any chance anybody know how to enable the firewall to let the port 19780 - 19790 open and not block them on windows 7 ?
am using an aztech D 600 wi-fi router
also is it normal in remote discovery that
when i have all setting correct and on the clint i enable the discovery it asks for authentication and i enter it and it says it correct but then it asks me to connect to the server and enter my admin username and password is that normal in normal discovery mode ?
