I finally bought a tablet! Wee!

I am finally running maemo linux 5.2008.43.7 on a Nokia N810 and just flashed it from a previous build.

Now what is a desirable method for adding Japanese support?

English is okay but for several communications is no good as some people need to read in order to understand some things.

I've tried getting just about every Japanese text support application working but several of them all rely on an incompatible package called iconv-jp. Why does this fail and what do I need to do to fix this?

That's exactly the problem! o_O

I want to be able to use any of this but none of it works.

NinjaEdit: Okay NOW it all of a sudden works. The iconv-jp reference completely disappeared from the catalog. Now the keyboard keeps hiding. All I did was update SCIM and Anthy. Why does all of this need to be updated just after installing it?

Edit2: Now I just noticed I lost the onscreen keyboard. Weirdness. I still get nothing after rebooting.

Something doesn't seem natural about SCIM. I can use the IME input like I'm used to, but something isn't right. Vowels don't show up.

All of this depends on iconv-jp and that's NOT installable. I know there's a workaround because I had this working somewhat a few hours ago.

I'm trying to do this again from the start to figure out exactly what I did. All of this depends on iconv-jp and that's NOT installable. I know there's a workaround because I had this working somewhat a few hours ago. I can't get any of the CJK working or Anthy or SCIM. This is a bit frustrating. :\

Installation Solution found:
The CJK is screwy. Chinook release is a larger build likely because CJK support is initially gone. The Diablo release constantly fails because the Chinook catalog and certain others are present. The only solution I've been able to use starts with deleting every catalog on the system and then running the Diablo CJK installer catalog.

From here the SCIM needs to be configured but it doesn't seem to work very well. Installing Maemo Japanese Support package fixes this. Onscreen keyboard is also missing. Matchbox keyboard is a workaround but I still miss that huge screen keyboard.
