Ok so I searched but could not find anything but I know someone has brought it up before because well... anyway I installed the map program and it deposited the map i downloaded into my internal memory device (all 700+MB) which of course fills it up to the point I can't add anything else to it, here is my question and it applies to any program where large data files are used.

Is there a way to either tell the device which memory location is default or move the files manually and add an alias or assign a pointer to make programs look somewhere else for the data? In dos it would have been an assign command but I can't seem to find anything similar for the nokia

Running:
Nokia 810 maemo linux 5.2008.43-7 os2008

I would like to have one memory card with all my maps on it and not eat up all the internal space with them.

Thanks!

You're using the Map program (a.k.a. Wayfinder) that came with your tablet, yes? If so, just make sure Map isn't running, and then use File Manager to move the entire "map" folder to the external card. When you next start Map, it will find the maps in, and use them from, their new location automatically.

Ok that was just too easy, so can I use that technique for other files as well? The device seems to want to put everything into internal flash first (smallest free space) then internal flash (next smallest) then external (largest).

Is the tablet really that intuitive? It will search all 3 places for what it is looking for before giving up?

Some applications that use large data files will check both the internal and external memory cards on startup and use the data files from either location. Map (Wayfinder) and Easy Debian do this. Other applications will not. It is up to the individual application programmer to include the functionality.
