This does not appear to as simple as porting the Skype video code to ARMEL. Skype would likely need to re-engineer their video format and proprietary protocols in order to support the N800 and N810. See Eero Tamminen's post to Maemo Users:
Since more modern handheld devices have grown more powerful, probably enough so that they can finally handle Skype's processor and latency requirements, it's unlikely the company will invest resources in reworking their underlying architecture to support old tech.

...why would it not be posible for Skype to provide a scaled down "Lite" version that merely sends a "still" picture every few seconds so that we can at least view a very recent picture of whom we are talking to.
