With it being a Nokia device i don't see the problem. Besides other netbooks windows or linux based have gone just fine without OVI\NOKIA SUITE.

No, honestly, I would love to see Windows change into something I'd like. I really would.

Fix their kernel, become "secure by default", shed their baggage, do actual original UI design. Actually innovate, instead of just saying it. I would love it.

And it wouldn't even have to be a *nix kernel. A Capability based system would be amazingly cool. Or a Plan 9 or Inferno based kernel (though, the modernization required there would probably be too extensive). Or even something honestly, genuinely, and completely new (that isn't then completely compromised by stupid decisions, like they did in ruining the NT kernel and architecture -- the original design was amazing, and only lasted one or two versions before it was gutted and ruined).

As for me hating Apple... If I do, it wont be for the same reasons I hate Windows. Apple's OS actually has a stable and usable core, with real solid UI design work. I don't always like Apple's Agenda, but I do love the OS (and I have, since it was Nextstep). My reason for leaving Apple 2 years ago (started by my purchase of an N800) had to do with the company's agenda interfering with the features I wanted ... not with the software itself.
You missed my points, but maybe I didn't make them clear.

The masses are not (yet) moving to Apple. Yes, Apple is steadily gaining some share, but the status quo eludes them. And I don't think Apple wants it anyway.

Apple's image has always exceeded its actual footprint. I doubt that will ever change.

As for hating Apple, I mean that they will be the 500 pound gorilla if they usurp Microsoft's throne. Then you'll have to hate them simply for being the biggest player... which I got from your rebel Vegan Manifesto.

Well, nothing can be secure by default. Especially OS, that has 90% of market.
And talking bout UI - Have you seen Win7?

When has it been 100% about need?

I want Solidworks on a netbook. Sonar too.

Tell that to OpenBSD.

We have to diverge there. By mere virtue of being open, Linux is essentially secure by default.

If it's not the masses, then who is it? They already had the self professed elite, art snobs, UI snobs, and a certain class of OS snobs. Who, if it's not the general consumer, is left? And if it's not the general consumer, why did it force MS's hand?

It's not a "rebel Vegan Manifesto" it's just a "Vegan Manifesto". I really don't care who is or isn't the dominant player. I care what the players (dominant or not) are doing.

Though, I will admit to being somewhat like that in politics... but that would take this discussion WAY off into the weeds

Seeing and using Microsoft products are two different things. I still have a Hotmail account. Have you used Hotmail lately? It's not usable, or do I have to buy a premium package to be able to go back and forth between message and message list. I don't want to see a slow Microsoft death, I want the French to behead them.

Once again: this is not black and white.

"The masses" is a nebulous blob comprised of diverse people who have certain leanings, but often they require nudging. Apple is pulling from that set BUT not getting the actual vast majority. They're gaining the fringe element of the middle, and I'll wager that's as far as they want to go with it. Why support the vast majority, who want to be spoonfed? The support cost model for that is too high.

Why does that even have to be debated? Isn't it self obvious? I'm sure most Apple snobs will gladly admit they're not part of "the masses" and don't welcome "their kind".
