Although I would love to have the digital compass on the N900, I'm not putting much hope on this.

Nokia has already stated that they have FM receiver inside the N900, even though there is no software, but they never stated that there is a digital compass.

I'm eager to be wrong, but i don't see how we can suddenly believe there's a compass at this late date.
Well. The 300 attendees at Maemo Summit all got an N900 for attending, and nobody is under NDA.

If the kernel is compiled without any support for the compass the software will not know if such hardware exists. Or it may be hidden, there is that possibility too. The same goes for the FM reciever.

I think that's because the n900 will soon be released. Why bother having an NDA for a week or two?

I think the N900 at the summit are hardware prototypes? (with all that a prototype implies).

They got a 6-month loaner. Why did you feel bad for them before? I would have loved to participate.

I assumed that they would be turning up in Amsterdam with no N900 in their pocket....which seemed like a truly dumb fustercluck....so I felt bad that such an opportunity was kinda wasted.

I'm glad that everyone has their own device to play with, however long they're allowed to keep it.

I've burned Amsterdam up dude....I doubt they'd let me back in

In case of the FM receiver the kernel driver module is available but cannot be loaded because the relevant communication bus has been powered down to save battery. It can be powered up by software though, after which the driver is loadable.

Yes, so they might be different from production N900. But not totally different, ofcourse.

Beware of pickpocketers in Am*dam...
