I agree that N900 have had rather limited amount of coverage. Many sites don't recognize Maemo or N900 actually. That said Nokia's phone sales rarely equal hype around it. Would it help? Definitely.
This is a totally different matter and i don't know if Nokia is doing it purposely, but i wouldn't go all out yet with N900. There's still room for improvements for HW and in Maemo.
That said N900 has had media coverage in here from main media and it shows. Good indication is the main finnish mobile phone forum where N900 thread have already had 290 543 views while N97 has 289 851 from end of 2008. And lots of old Nokia users coming from iphone, WM and Android phones seem to be ready to come back to Nokia again. Didn't really happen with N97. It sure looks like N95 success in here.
