Any idea how I can do that (login as root) without access to the Extras repo to download any software?
Searching the forums tells me the default password, but the root account is locked out, so I can't use it, or sudo.

Thanks

I'm facing the same problem. I'm pretty sure all servers are down: tableteer, as well as extras.

EDIT: Though this only happens from the N800 device, app-manager as well as apt-get update, as I can reach the servers from my ubuntu box.

no, they're not down. I reflashed yesterday and not 5 minutes ago installed rootsh from extras.

Are you sure? I just reflashed, all servers give a connection timeout!

Yeah, just as another test I installed s4chords (not sure which repo that's in) and it was successful.

Yes, it's working now for me too. Weird, as I didn't change a thing.

Hmmm, well I still can't access these repositories from my N800.

What is weird is that I can't hit them via the web browser on the device either - just doesn't connect.

EG, I've just now opened two new browser windows, one loading slashdot.org the other repository.maemo.org/extras/ on the device.

Slashdot loads after a couple of seconds. But the repository never loads - I get a network timeout error. Even though I can load this same page on my desktop pc.

Any ideas anyone?

If you have ssh server installed and running and you know the root password, try gaining root privileges that way. Run "ssh -l root localhost" and enter root's password when requested.

Also, you probably don't want to do this, but you can access root terminal using "sudo gainroot" IF you have switched the device to R&D mode. Obviously running the device in R&D mode is not recommended for end users. See Maemo wiki for more information on how to enable R&D mode if you really want to do that.

Since you also have tried accessing the repository with the browser I'm not sure what good running apt-get as root will do. It may reveal some additional information but just as likely it may not.

Ok, all of a sudden now I can access these repositories.

I swapped from DHCP to static addresses for my WiFi connection. I don't know if this actually helped or was just a coincidence. But now its working in any case.

Thanks
