It's in extras-testing I believe. Not sure if it has been /optified so I'm not sure if just anyone should install it without knowing the risks of installing things from extras-testing.

    Hi,

just to summarise there is no way of integrating msn (in the same manner as skype) at the moment without running beta software which could have issues with the device ?

    Cheers,

Correct MontyBravo. Though most people are running it without much issue. So it's fine if you install it and then you disable the repository.

Can someone verify there is a "Nokia Messaging - IM Beta" at
    http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-messaging-chat

Has a Nokia Beta Labs app ever been ported over to Maemo?

Well if FRING gets ported over to Maemo that would be great.

The new version of Fring on Symbian does Skype Video, would be good if it came to Maemo too

A really smart thing would be to handle the IM protocols on a server somewhere, and just have one keepalive/notification connection to your N900.

That would save battery power by reducing the radio power, as well as reducing your mobile data usage.
