I noticed in Control panel / Memory a line "Installed applications: 0 kB" in the memory card tab. That would indicate that it is possible install applications on the memory card (without using the ExtendedRootFileSystem "hack" which, I guess, doesn't work in IT2006). Is installing on the MMC supported by the application manager?

Due to the nature of the package file format, I would expect that it is not. Every file in a package comes with its full path and those paths may even be hardcoded into the software you're installing.

However, it is possible to move files after installing them, and then create a symlink from their original location.

It's also possible to move the complete file system to the memory card, but that's nothing for the faint of heart. And there's a project called mmc-unionfs aimed at porting unionfs to the 770, but as far as I know there's no working package for IT2006.
