I notice that there's a few threads about making community-provided wallpaper packs.

I just wanted to suggest that some of the gifted music / audio people in the maemo.org community should start making a few "ringtone packs" for us to enjoy on our N900s.

I know that most people will want a clip of their favorite copyright-encumbered pop tune as a ringtone, but I thought some audio engineers out there might want to make us some creative commons licensed ringtones.

Some sound effects would be cool. An old-style telephone ringing, maybe an old church belltower, that sort of thing.

Any community-produced music available?

Making a ringtone for the N900 is simple: make an MP3 file that sounds reasonably good coming from the speakers of an N810, and you've got yourself an N900 ringtone.

Copyright encumbered? Fair use as far as I'm concerned.

In musician thread are some MP3 available.

Previous Maemo versions came with polyphonic ringtones. Are these still available in Maemo 5? I quite liked them, am using 1 of them on Nokia E71.

Is this just a matter of finding the proper host?

I'm sure it'll be easy to come up with the content once the sharing\hosting\distribution backend is in place.

ysss, I don't understand your question...

I thought it would be fun to have a few "ringtone-ready" mp3s from the community for the N900 by the time it goes on sale, similar to the way people are making wallpapers for the N900 already.

Here's your Old Telephone Ring:

It's from FreeSound and lisenced under Creative Commons.

And some editing in Audacity.

Oh, I meant that imho ringtones are generally media content that comes in 'streams'. People just create them all the time, just like backgrounds and themes.

If that's the case, shouldn't we just find a webhost for it and let people add their ringtones to the site?

ps: Personally I'm not crazy about pre-packaged media packs (desktop, themes, mp3s) in repositories because most of them seem dated and feel less manageable since they come in packs

since I'm pretty sure there are plenty of songs and music creations under CC why not download a music file and edit it yourself on the phone?
Has audacity been ported to maemo?
