or a 770 thing? - but after nearly a year or mostly everyday use, my biggest gripe/wishlist want is to have a real "desktop", where I could drag or create files/shortcuts to files so I could with one click/touch show people a vid, link to a current fave website, play an mp3, make or add to a txt file etc...

the clock/rss/google weblink are there (if you want them - I don't, I have a clean image), is there someway to do what I want? if not can someone make it (I can't!)

it just makes the whole 770 experience a little pre-win 96 for me, when it shouldn't be.

It's a design decision by the Maemo team. There are some things which get close to what you want on the ApplicationCatalog works-in-progress page, though.

... and I think it was a good design decision

Basically, its possible that people in the community develop a completely new, alternative desktop with the features you want. I don't think it's likely, though.

(BTW, the exact project from the works in progress page is most probably http://cosy-home.garage.maemo.org/ )

Skirting dangerously close to laptop-like functionality has drawn them a lot of flak. While I think pushing the envelope is great for making the 770 experience a richer one, we have to stay realistic.

The thing that has always been most striking to me about a fully-customized desktop is how slowly it often has to be built, even on fast desktop systems. It's easy to imagine what a potential drain it could be on the 770.

I'd just like to see a few more file handling features in the gui shell. I don't think they'd be a significant drain.

As long as users are required to becomeroot for some file operations, that will keep this device (and its successors) from truly going mainstream.

yes, I'm not looking for a fully fledged desktop experience, but perhaps user-cutomizable "applets" along the lines of those as already exist and which the "cosy home" maemo garage thing hints at but doesn't seem to achieve.

maybe one applet that would hold a couple of text file icons, one with a couple of pictures/slideshow, one with a couple of net bookmarks - and the ability to drag onto those applets. surely this should be do-able as a tweak to existing applet code?

it just seems the drag and drop functionality of the 770 is severely under-used and, although I appreciate greatly the developer, open source aspects, as a non-linux head myself I do find 770 frustrating in some ways, although I appreciate it is an INTERNET TABLET it has the possibility to be customized to whatever the user wants it to be, within reason surely?
