Thank God(not you), we have Microsoft and Apple that actually fight for what we care and are not just interested in how deep my pocket goes...

unlike linux
My past 3 devices have been running WinMo, so up until recently I've followed WinMo closely. I can say with certainty that support for WinMo devices doesn't differ drastically. My Palm Treo 700w was purchased with WM5.0 and never got an OS upgrade. My HTC xv6800 came with WM6.0 and did receive an upgrade to WM6.1, but nothing past that. My HTC Touch Pro came with WM6.1, and also never got an OS upgrade. The HTC Touch Pro 2 came with WM6.1 for most carriers (6.5 for AT&T) and did receive an update to 6.5, but will most likely not get 7. Only recently has there been more focus on getting official updates to WM out to devices, because the OS has fallen too far behind the competition. WinMo definitely has had very much community support bringing unofficial updates to popular devices, and the same is more than possible with Maemo.
