2G for dummies

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Consider me a 770 dummy. Should I have any reservations about ordering the first and cheapest 2g rs-mmc card I see on the net (or the mmc mobile that says it is a replacement)?
Will I be able to just pop it in and put more and longer video programs?
I know nothing about formatting or partitioning (but I am a fast and willing learner).
I am a new 770 owner who has only had use of the 770 for a few weeks before sending it in for a minor repair of the earphone jack input. While waiting anxiously for it's return I am thinking about getting the memory but don't want to waste money.

2gb cards are supported in the latests flash image.

Repartitioning is not absolutely needed as swap file support is built in. It is however limited to 64mb in size, and is saved along side your data files. In the linux PC world, the swap file is normally written to it's own dedicated partition, hence why tinkers users prefer to partition the flash card. (see other threads for explanations how to)

Mmcmobile is a newer faster and backward compatible to RS-MMC. The stock 770 does not use the extra speed this offers unless you upgrade the kernel (see other threads for how to). The speed does help if you a seperate flash reader/writer to transfers data from your computer.

Depending where you are geographicaly located in the world, the 2gb Kingston still appears to be the best deal. Priced less than twice the cost of 1gb cards, and a lifetime warranty.

TV shows sans commercials take about 200mb or less, use Media Converter on your favorite show to see what size they end up. Add that up and you should have a idea how much screen time you could pack on a 2gb card.

I got the 2gb Kingston card but can't format. The card stays gray on the 770 and can't be addressed.
Any ideas?

Try formatting it on your PC.

Does that work pretty easy? I assume that requires a card reader. I don't have one now but think I have one coming. When I do get it, is the formatting pretty obvious....including the choice of FAT or FAT 32? I think someone suggested one is better than the other.

yes, it's easy. just don't accidentally format your C: drive.

Can't you just format it through the USB cable?

Yes, even Partition Magic 8 works with 770 in mass storage mode. I was able to easily repartition 2gb MMC this way.
MMC connected with my cardreader doesn't work with partitioning programs.

Great work, Nokia!
