"Oh, did I forget to mention that I dumped 20GB of multi-media on it." Are there any linux experts having actual problems? Maybe I'll go read the reboot thread, but I'm starting to see a pattern here. Regardless, noobs take note: when someone is trying to help you, please try to post the information they're asking for. If you don't understand them, ask for clarification. Experts: someone please create a one button applet that allows people to dump info to a file that can easily be attached to a forum post. We're the triage, not the bug fixers. Off the top of my head, minimum info needed:
df
ps
top -b -n 1
a diff of a sorted dpkg -l and a pristine firmware sorted dpkg -l
firmware version
uname -a

Are non-linux experts to assume or recognise that a device would become totally unstable as a result of 20gb of media files being placed on it?

Of course it's reasonable to have expectations of stability, but when you title threads that imply devices behave like the weather, I can usually guess what comes next. And sure enough, as your posts continued you revealed more about your behavior, which then gave people more insight about the n900's behavior. So, yeah, maybe next time give more information up front about what you did, and then maybe you can get back to "Just Kinda Buggy" quicker. Or, if you aspire to "Never Buggy," hopefully you would have gathered enough information to properly file a bug report. Good luck.

just to butt in.
and now you reveal something new again.
I guess it just IS easier, if you also state what you did before going "omg the phone crahsed, it's buggy" but lets say you installed "program yx" which is a buggy program. And you first say it hours after.
So in short, explain the phones "condition" like, if you installed something as of late, or how many mb/gb of files you got on it, and when it started to act like that.
I mean anybody who read your OP, would have to read through all of these 6 pages so far to understand more.
SO imo you should go back and update your OP with more information so people can help you better

it's eating about 20% of my ram and it hasn't been doing that before
resetting the device does not help
