I don't know how things are with other devices. I have never bought a device where I have come on to a website to constantly discuss it. But you just have to visit the site for a day to see that the device has all sorts of issues. Wifi not connecting, no reception on vodafone, phone randomnly rebooting, etc. May be the same for all other devices if you visit their forums but this one has loads of problems. It may be that every single person with an N900 that has a problem is on Maemo discussing it but as I do not have shares in Nokia I have to warn you that there is a risk. There is a risk with any device but with this one this site gives the impression there is a bigger risk than usual.
I have no idea what you are talking about. There are only a minute few posts dealing with issues. EVERYTHING else is about people who are enthusiastic about their devices and this platform. Everywhere I look are posts about learning about how to develop for this platform, what features people would like added and people willing to take up the challenge of implementing those features.
If you post a bug in bugzilla you get ACTUAL nokia developers responding to you.
I think you need to reevaluate your stand.
What specific issues are you having with your device?
dont worry dude! i got n900, first one had reboot problem but i just replaced it today from the nokia store and this one is working perfectly so far no reboots, mic working, no dead pixels. or anything. great! n im new to linux never never used linux. total noob here. iphone was my first touchscreen phone used it for a month then sold i felt really limited using it. but now hell yeah even right now im using my n900 and doing voice chat at the same time lol. im totally amazed what this device can do. anyway just keep your fingers crossed and wish you get a stable unit. other than im totally happy. =D i had no high expectations so im definitely satisfied with it.
I am not talking about me specifically. I have not had any hardware problems though I have had loads of software problems which hopefully a firmware update will fix. Looking through the N900 threads we get the following:
- Music player not recognizing new songs
- Speaker issue?
- [Poll] Reboots with N900?
- How many people have the constant reboot issue?
That is from the first page alone. Going further down we have:
- n900 reboot problem, why hasn't nokia spoken?
- N900 Unexpected reboots
- Help: N900 Won't Charge
- Broken Speakers? (help)
- no signal on vodafone
- N900 accelerometer issues
- Another hardware issue? Backlit keyboard
There are of course tons more of such threads which I cannot bother to continue copy and pasting. I think I have pasted enough to prove my point. Like I said I don't know how it is on a similar forum for iphone, HTC, etc. What I do know is that I see enough of these threads on a daily basis to be able to say to a potential buyer that your device should work well but there is a real risk it would not and this website gives me the impression that the risk is higher than normal on a new device.
On my own side the issues I am having yesterday and today alone ( have had other software issues in the past):
- when I switch on the device music player takes ages (over 30 minutes to recognise that I have any songs or videos. This despite playing about 3 videos by going into file manager.
- installed qik, it worked for two videos. Then when I was trying to show it off to my wife it failed to work. Had to uninstall it.
- tried sound recorder for the first time today and each time it just freezes up.
- file manager was freezing each time I tried to play an audio file (had to go through file manager since according to the device I did not have any audio files despite having over 4000).
- Does not play mp4 files that I was playing with no problems on ipod touch despite Nokia boasting amazing codec support.
- Half of the time the device is unable to play my video files. And this is not the problem in my point above. I am talking about files it has played before. Even a few minutes earlier. I play it minutes later and I get message unsupported file format. And once I get that message no video what so ever is going to play until I reset the device.
- Videos when they do work take ages and ages and ages and ages to start up. On ipod touch it was always instantaneous.
- Videos stutter for first few seconds. On ipod touch they played perfectly smoothly throughout.
- msn chat a quarter of the time gives network server error (plug in is still in testing so I think this should be fine when it is final).
Most of the issues I have mentioned are to do with the media player. If I were to rate its stability I would give it a 7%. It is that bad. However, I am hoping a firmware update will fix these issues or there would be significantly more stable music and video players available soon. I have over 20gb of media files but I had the same on ipod touch and didn't ever have any issues. I know that is a dedicated media device but I am pretty sure the iphone is the same. And please the answer to my post is not go and get an iphone then. I bought the N900 because I wanted an N900. I am just listing some of the issues with it.
im with etuoyo in the fact that the number of problems people have had has put me off a bit. like etuoyo though i really want the phone. This is the first time i have researched and followed a phone to the extent i have with the N900. sometimes i wish i didnt bother and just went and got the dam thing. although then i would be one of theose people that really didnt know what they were buying.
i cant wait to get my hands on one after the firmware update. im going to drool for a while as it charges and then try my best not to brick the phone while getting the most out of it
It's good to remember that the N900 is selling in great numbers and the ones who have problems will be the loudest ones and this forums surely isn't small.
I have aboslutely zero problems (device is bought 4th of December), but if you really are in panic get something else Or if the N900 is something you really want, wait.
there are less than 70 votes to random reboots @ bugzilla. so if for example 100 000 devices are shipped, you must really be unlucky (but still somebody has to get the defective ones, those doesn't disappear anywhere)
MInes working well, thought i had a dead pixel on the bottom of my screen but I guess its just a stuck pixel cause its gone now. My concern is battery life, its not that great even with all the tweaks. I do think however when the firmware update comes along it will really improve our n900 experience.
No problems here. Normally Nokia has high quality, maybe there is more defects in first batch from factory than usually. Anyway warranty will get you a new one so stop worrying

Battery life is definitely something that should be improved. Modern high end smartphones really are in trouble with this. HTC HD2 got 1230mAh vs N900 1320mAh and will always last thru the day so there surely is room for improvements with N900. Goal should be that N900 lasts 24h with pretty much any use.
Tissot- I agree, my expectations for this phone battery is that it should atleast last a day and a half or two if use sparingly. Why make a fast sports car with all the bells and whistles yet your unable to make full use of it right. Im just really hoping that its a bug causing this and that nokia gets this straighten out with the expect firmware updating due before years end.
