since you yourself admit that you don't have a previous frame of reference, let me tell you a little secret:
those who have problems are _always_ the loudest. if your device reboots, you will most likely look for help, come here and post or start a thread. if your device has no issues, you'll probably never know of talk.maemo.org.

iPod supports DRM content and the N900 does not - are you sure that this a Codec issue rather than DRM?

    - Videos when they do work take ages and ages and ages and ages to start up. On ipod touch it was always instantaneous.

    - Videos stutter for first few seconds. On ipod touch they played perfectly smoothly throughout.

    - msn chat a quarter of the time gives network server error (plug in is still in testing so I think this should be fine when it is final).
If you have MSN plug-in installed then you could have some chatter going on in the background, this might affect other things on the system too.

I have over 20gb of media files but I had the same on ipod touch and didn't ever have any issues. I know that is a dedicated media device but I am pretty sure the iphone is the same. And please the answer to my post is not go and get an iphone then. I bought the N900 because I wanted an N900. I am just listing some of the issues with it.
The iPhone is basically an iPod with the phone capabilities added on. It also only runs the core system plus the application you are running at the time. The N900 runs everything you have loaded.

I would however have a look at the Codec that is being used for problematic files and see if there is a certain format of file that plays with stutters and others that don't play at all. File a bugzilla entry and then we have a target for codec to make available or sort out performance issues. Unfortunately there are a huge array of possibilities on this so help on narrowing things down helps lots !

had my device since the first weekend of release and havwn't had any problems at all.. But i am a very very very basic user. i wanted the N900 because of it's internet capabilities. haven't got a clue what heptic feedback is or how i would even operate the microphone. one problem i have had though. when i got my device i had someone else on my answer phone message, and i keep recieving random texts from people asking for hayley, but then that's a vodafone issue, not the N900's

no problems here, just need a codec pack so the video player is less useless.

i agree totally about that most ppls that have Problems will post in here actually.

I would like to know more internal Information from The Maemo Developers Team about the agreements with Nokia. How they share the objectives between Nokia and the Community here.

For Example is Bugfixing a Part of Nokia or will the SW Bugfixes come from the Community over Nokia Updateservice to us?

Else the Bugtracker dont make sense in my opinion.

Ah you may be right there. The videos in question are videos from youtube which I downloaded from youtube and then converted to mp4. But not sure if that could be the problem because one of the videos has actually played. The other 4 from youtube have not.

If you have MSN plug-in installed then you could have some chatter going on in the background, this might affect other things on the system too.

Could be. Hopefully when the MSN plug-in leaves Testing everything should be smoother.

Yes I guess it is a bit unrealistic to expect the media player on this device to match that of an iphone or ipod touch. But the video player I think is generally quite bad even for a true all in one device. I guess since it is not intended as a main stream device Nokia did not see the need to focus on this aspect. Media player is definitely something which is very important to the main stream consumer. Hopefully they give it more attention when they release the Maemo 6 main stream device.

I would however have a look at the Codec that is being used for problematic files and see if there is a certain format of file that plays with stutters and others that don't play at all. Very helpful info. How do I check the codec and other details for video files on the device?

Oh god, don't ever be a doctor-
"Well Mr. Wilson, you have nothing to worry about, the new heart we gave you is failing, but we'll just send it back. The new one should be just fine! Probably."
    Reassure much?

Anyways, I don't live in the US and the device is not supported where I live so it would be troualesome..

I'm getting it anyway, Im just trying to figure out my chances of not getting a damaged device.

By the way, I wish people would stop thanking people saying the device is fine (without any facts to back it up) and that I should just cancel my order.. That's the most useless advice I could get on this topic.

    the easiest way is mediainfo

it'll tell you exactly what media file(s) you're dealing with.

Wifi not connecting, no reception on vodafone, phone randomnly rebooting, etc. May be the same for all other devices if you visit their forums but this one has loads of problems. It may be that every single person with an N900 that has a problem is on Maemo discussing it but as I do not have shares in Nokia I have to warn you that there is a risk. There is a risk with any device but with this one this site gives the impression there is a bigger risk than usual.
most problems I recognized in "talk" are software related and known to be fixed asap.

every iphone/macbook forum explodes after the first release of a device, with lots of issues, I am bored of it here because its so few and nothing serious apart of the mic and eMMC problems.

with motorola for example and the new droid I am already scared of the fact that motorola doesnt care that much of firmware fixes...

    the HTC stuff
I read some weird things about windows-mobile and the other second my mother tells me that an IE8 update (feature) is now known as a bug (again) and affects with very effects on her shop's website (close to unusable). I left windows years ago because of all this buggy stuff, and will never return again!

here I know I have a huge community working on fixes, at least...
this community burns a hole in the shiny surface of *locked* iphones and is yet to be known as place to actually find help. did iphone forums do that? (locked is the normal state and to keep legal notes in mind...)

sorry for comparing all with the iphone here but I keep the sentence in my mind "but on the iphone I can... stop it! you cant and never will" I had all three versions of iphone in my hands and guess what, it looks good but thats about it!

and why the hell is this thread hijacked? get your own thread!

click "new thread" instead of "reply" please!
