Hello everyone,

I just bought a nokia 770 at my local compusa ($100 rebate!!). My intention is for this to be a laptop replacement. I'm a student and all I basically use my laptop for is for web and email as well as typing notes in class.

I've been using it for about an hour and it seems to fit the bill nicely for web and email use.

I do have a few questions though:

1) A friend of mine has one and was able to activate a thumb keyboard (a keyboard that takes up the screen entirely) How can I activate it?

2) How do I set the 770 as discoverable so I can transfer files from my computer to it via bluetooth?

3) What keyboards are compatible with the 770?

4) What's a good word processing program that works with MS word files (or can import them)?

Thanks!

Before anything else, let me say that the NOKIA 770 is an Internet Tablet. It can be used well to surf the Internet. Its main purpose was to be used to do this. It cannot be used as a ' total Laptop replacement' . Please do not make the mistake of thinking that way.

Now, to answer some of your questions.

: What keyboards are compatible with the 770?

In this Forum you will see the mention of many kinds of bluetooth Keyboards that can be used with the Nokia 770. If you do a 'search ' on this topic you will surely find a lot of information.

There are various .deb files that can be downloaded from
' www.maemo.org ' , that will help you a lot in regards to your need for a good Word processing program
.

I still have problems with the notion that the 770 does "well" in surfing the internet. Yes, you can surf the 'net with the 770, and in most cases it will do so quite smoothly, but the built-in Opera browser was, IMHO at least, a poor choice: too many websites and -experiences are beyond Opera's scope to call the 770 an "Internet Tablet" with a straight face.

Maybe one day, when Minimo runs, or when someone ports the full Firefox to the 770, we will finally be able to call it an "Internet Tablet".

And I'm not even mentioning the Abominable Mail Client...

Wow, thanks everyone. I'm aware of the limitations of the 770, but I've been doing some digging and it seems that it will fit the bill nicely in terms of what i want to use it for.

Actually, I haven't used my laptop for months. The 770 does many things better than my laptop; for example, it is way to hard to use the laptop to take notes (even though my laptop is a Tablet PC).

I consider the 770 to be my primary computer now and I am very choosy about these things. My last tie with the laptop was severed when I got a bluetooth keyboard for the 770.

I do admit that I am planning on writing a USB screen driver for the "870" if the USB port will support it. Also, it is awkward to print from the 770 but since I have become accustomed to e-books and PDFs on the 770 it is rare that I want to print.

I think that the attitude that we should not consider the 770 to be usable for this or that is dangerous. I have actually become somewhat loyal to Nokia because the 770 is SO useful -- and I am a cynic about loyalty to corporations. But if the kind of limiting thinking that says "we can't do this or shouldn't expect that" takes over then HP or someone else will step in and fill the gap and Nokia will become second or third.

Therefore, in the interest of financing my purchase of the "870" by selling my laptop, I shall now reiterate what I would like to see to make the laptop even more obsolete.

0) Same size and weight.
1) True USB with drivers to support USB monitors, DVD-drives, etc.
2) PRINTING!
3) Bluetooth stereo audio profile
4) Faster graphics and sound (I am working with OpenGL)
5) Rumored two SD ports (with support for high capacity)
6) Camera (any chance for optical zoom? Maybe later?)

If the rumors about the "870" are true then the only items in question are the USB support, printing support, and bluetooth support.

In addition, but not yet necessary, GPS and WiMAX or similar would be nice. And perhaps someone could make a case with a bluetooth keyboard built in.

Here's to the end of giant (2 pound) computers!

Keep up the amazing work Nokia!

Okay, seeing as most of wood_e's questions have been answered, I'll jump in and say that that
the 770 has definitely evolved from just being a mere Internet Tablet Nokia intended it to be. It
just goes to show you that the open source community presented with the right tools to build with
should never be underestimated.

There seems to be a new wave of interest in the 770 over the holidays that will only serve to add
to the richness of the community as well as some more interesting ideas for what the device and
the Maemo platform can do.

I know I'm very excited about what the future holds for these great new devices, and I'm glad more people are getting involved with helping to build that future.
