I doubt there was any damage, and don't think the "flat/curve thing" is an issue. However, I have seen other people mention the charger misidentified as a PC when the cable is connected so maybe there's a rare bug involved.

I was told it was head office.

So what the hell should I do now.

How Many N900 users with this problem would be willing to sign a affidavit stating that they did nothing abnormal to the phone. A collection of these may be of value in small claims court along with the phone not having any scratches etc. Nokia's own claims that this is an issue on a small number of phones.

At that point it is down to Nokia to prove we have damaged the phones. And we demand repayment of the cost?

This is greatly worrying i luckily don't have this problem yet!! YET but expect it will prob happen. As such i have been watching the thread for updates and i am appaled to see how nokia is handling it. I really really think more publicity is needed not really sure how to go abouts this but seriously surely Nokia can't get away with this they should just recall the phones :0(

So who do I call to work that out. When I call the official care line no one is able to give me accurate info. They stated that my phone was sent out fixed.

I cannot find anyway to talk to anyone in nokia who can give me an answer

For starters the whole Beyond Economic Repair statement.

What the hell is that about. Its a warranty if its not my cause it is their responsibility. Economics has nothing to do with it.

I just called Nokia care USA about my broken A/C adapter that came out with the n900 from newegg, and it worked once, and then broke the second day, and they are sending me a new charger, soon.
so, it was very quick to deal with them, I asked them about the recall or anything about micro usb charger, and mentioned community forum talks and the guy said no, but I kind of feel like he had something else in his mind, ... may be, there is something that nokia knows and they just want to learn which are affected etc.

I'm sad to say I returned my n900 due to this problem after reading what Nokia had to say. Stating that some internally known number of devices are affected implies that they know which ones are or they wouldn't be able to know how many. If that much is known then why no recall of the affected devices? Also, why give users the option of taking their device to nokia care to have it repaired, again without the knowledge of whether the device is one of those affected?

All I can see is that nokia suspects that all devices are affected due to poor design and the minority of which they speak are the folks upset enough to pursue the issue adequately to get their device replaced (with another presumably faulty product -- they still haven't said that it's been addressed, only that a minority of all devices are affected). HumanPenguin is talking about court and I would be too in his shoes. I don't want to wear those shoes and took advantage of my return window at Amazon.

I was very excited to get the product despite its obvious flaws as a phone (really, I just wanted the phone part to justify buying it ). I was sad to see the UPS man take it away.

Nokia lost this customer simply because, despite all their talk of openness in the keynote speech at nokia world, they aren't open enough to give me any sort of confidence.

I wanted a recall of affected devices and, with that, a way to know which were defective. I'd have been even happier to know what they did to fix it. Since they don't say any of that, one can only assume the answers to the questions would have to be "all" and "nothing yet".

Still, if they'd just release that sort of information, I'd happily buy it all over again. For all the problems, Nokia did more right than wrong with that phone. It's just how absolutely necessary being able to connect to that port is. I'd live with the terrible facing VGA camera for example I just couldn't take the sick feeling I'd get every time my battery died (every 8 or so hours... I made pretty good use of it while I had it). No one should be afraid to charge their phone.
