so whats the deal for updating these fundamentals. i mean, there isnt a repository for nokia messaging. is there any nokia kernel (aka firmware) updates anywhere

There are a couple ways to report bugs and ideas to Nokia.

(brainstorm is for ideas, report bugs is for, well, bugs)
The base functionality is under heavy development, supposedly there is a new release due out by the end of the year, or early next year. And of course, anyone can develop apps and widgets for the n900.
